M1 MBP Screen Flickering, External Monitor Crashing, & Unable to Connect to Apple Watch

Hi all, I LOVE this new M1 MacBook Pro, but it is exhibiting some issues that my Intel MacBook Pro never had!

First, I have noticed the built-in display sometimes flickers if the resolution is scaled down. Scaling it back to default seems to fix the problem. Anyone else seeing this? I want to make sure it's a software and not a hardware issue.

Second, when connected to an external monitor, I have seen the M1 lock and log me out and the external monitor will go black. It's the same monitor and cable I used with the Intel Mac and never had this issue. It's EXTREMELY aggravating because it will lock me out in the middle of work.

Lastly, and maybe this is somehow related to the display issues, my M1 MacBook Pro does not automatically unlock when my Apple Watch is nearby like my Intel Mac used to. I went into Settings>Security and I click on the "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps..." and then I get this error every time: "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch."

These three things are really affecting my workflow, so I'm hoping these are easy fixes. Anyone else seeing these issues?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

UPDATE: Since updating to Big Sur v 11.2.1 my monitor connection / flickering / display issues have been resolved. I simply ran the software update that was recommended and the problems were fixed. Hope that helps someone else!

With a 4k dell monitor connected both using HDMI and thunderbolt 3, my m1 Mac mini flickers and gives a 1-5 sec blank black screen every ~5 min or more. It is very frustrating and I have tried a bunch of different monitors, cables, settings, etc and nothing solves the issue. I hope there is a resolution to this issue ASAP... its very very annoying.

Only other comment I have to contribute is that it seems to stay black longer if you are not using the mouse or keyboard... and seems to NOT stay blank/black as long if you are moving/clicking the mouse or typing. Its a really weird problem and has happened twice while writing this comment.

I'm having the same issue with the M1 Mac Mini connected via HDMI to a BenQ PD2700U 4K HDR Monitor.

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be any issues until I start using Sketch, it starts off as a subtle flicker and then spirals out of control until the entire screen is really difficult to look at and I have to power the machine down, even then it sometimes stays

Same issues for me with new Mac mini M1. I tried several different HDMI cords and setting on the monitors (ASUS and Samsung 4k monitors) but the vert bands and flickering still exists. I have updated the OS to 11.2.1. It also doesn't seem to recognize the native res of the monitor. It always sets the default resolution lower (screen images are very big) and I have to scale everything smaller (more space) to take advantage of the higher res monitor.

This was not the case when I updated to 11.2.1 before swapping monitors, I think there are 2 different flicker issues, flickering where whole screens goes on/off like a strobe like a bad connection and 'shimmering type flicker' that only happens when dark apps /images are on the screen, specific greys e.g like Logic Pro in dark mode which will then produce faint lines to the screen.

Well, after my 3rd round with online support today (who are very friendly folks) ended with a suggestion that I buy my 3rd different display cable format (this time a usb-c to DisplayPort) I gave up and returned my m1 air. I’m fortunate enough to still be within the return period. My old trusty intel MBP is still kicking (admittedly like 100 times slower than the M1) so I’ll just wait this one out till a fix comes out, whether it’s software or hardware.

Having the same issue here as well. MBP M1 running Big Sur 11.2.2.

Screen on MBP flickers inconsistently. Yesterday no issues. This morning no issues. But right now...it's flickering every few minutes. Currently attached to HP 22cwa external monitor via a USB-C splitter to HDMI.

Additionally, having issues with screen resolution on MBP as well when connected to external monitor. Can only see as far as the Siri icon...can't see date/time. It's very annoying when using the laptop as a dual monitor and trying to work in full screen windows on the laptop.

Apple, can you please fix this?? Never had this issue with my intel MBA.

I do think Apple will be reading these comments and his technical issues and work on them by releasing updates you can’t fix something if nothing is wrong therefore hopefully they will come to a solution. I do wish however people experiencing issues with this new M1 chip could be given something in return as in a way we are the guinea pigs I was going to suggest one year free of Apple TV however my screen is flickering so it doesn’t really help haha

Thanks Shane for your reply. I think we should just stop hoping and stop wasting our time. It looked like a good product, but if it’s keeping us going round in circles, what’s the point. I hate this, when companies get so big that they think they can just try products out on folks, trusting on their reputation and then they don’t deliver when there are problems.

We aren’t guinea pigs, Apple we’re hardworking, ordinary people looking for cost effective solutions for our businesses.
