No indication of voicemails

I am a longtime Android (Samsung Galaxy) user who a few weeks ago purchased an iPhone 12pro.

I was quite irritated yesterday when I realized, by chance, that I had received 8 voicemail messages over the past few weeks - messages that the phone did not tell me about. There was nothing on the home screen, no bubble/flag on the "Phone" app icon, nothing within the phone app under "voicemail" menu item at the bottom, etc. Sure there were "missed calls" (and their notifications) but we all know that many missed calls are spam/junk or from people who don't leave VMs.

I've searched/read these forums the best I can and there's no real help in this regard other than to suggest that either my carrier doesn't actually have voicemail (or I'm not signed up for it) or that the notifications in my phone are somehow turned off.

I've also learned that this is a problem for iPhone users FOR YEARS. What the h3ll?

My carrier (AT&T for years) and my plan absolutely have voicemail and that the notifications for the iPhone's phone feature are all turned on AFAIK. If they exist, I cannot find any separate settings for voicemail notifications.

The on-phone Samsung voicemail notification was reliable, automatic and obvious. I used it all the time with zero issues.

Thanks for your time.

If you are having to call for voicemail and are not receiving a notification, then yes, something is wrong. When you tap on the voicemail icon in the lower status bar, what happens? What do you see on the screen?

I've been an AT&T customer for a long time. If they are aware you have an iPhone, then they need to provision your iPhone for Visual Voicemail. If they don't, then you still see the Call Voicemail symbol. Voicemail is a carrier function, so you need to contact them to either correctly provision your voicemail or reset it. They know how to do that. Once that is done and you get your VVM, the only other thing you may have to do is enter your password. AT&T will give you that as well. But once that happens, check your Settings>Phone>and make sure that you have your notifications set for Allow, and make sure that Alerts are set for all 3 types and Banner Style is Persistent. Whenever you receive a call you should get a notification, and if they leave a voicemail you should get one as well. With notifications and badges on, you will get a sound, vibration (if set), a screen notification, and a red badge.

I can retrieve a VM both ways. (Pressing and holding ‘1’ OR using the Voicemail icon in the phone app)

Anyway, I got hold of AT&T support and they reset the VM. So all’s good with me, now.

Based on the little digging I’ve done, it seems that folks with an existing vm instance can get screwed with a new iPhone. Or something like this.

It’s not like a game that won’t play. Missing voicemails is a big deal.

Not happy either with Apple or AT&T at the moment. Customers shouldn’t get screwed like this. Been going on for years.

Anyway, thanks all, for the help.

iphone uses visual voicemail, when you to voicemail does it show you the voicemail or do you have to call and check your voicemail? If the latter you need to call AT&T back and make sure your line is provisioned for Visual Voicemail.

When you say that if you have a VM there will be an entry. So, if I understand this correctly, you see a listing of the number, time it was received, length? That is different from what you said that you could call VM by pressing 1. Like you, I've been with them for a long time. Don't remember exactly, but it has to be close to yours, since my first phone was a bag phone from them, so probably around the same time! Ha.

I would still contact AT&T and let them know. Let them know that you don't get voicemail until you get into the phone and press the button. They may just need to reset your voicemail account and that could fix the notification. I must say that I've never had a problem with them and using VVM, so I know they can get it working.

Thanks for the response.

I *can* call to check for VMs. (Press and hold ONE)

But new VMs also show up if I click the gray voicemail icon at the bottom of the Phone app screen.

When I said

>>nothing within the phone app under "voicemail" menu item

I meant that there's no OVERT indication (like a red dot or ANYTHING) on that icon or anywhere else to tell me there are VMs.

I want some high-level, IN YOUR FACE indication on the home screen where it belongs. So I don't have to dig.

Thanks

Bought the phone from AT&T so they are aware. Mobile Customer since 1991 (Cellular One, Cingular, LOL)

If I have a VM, there will be an entry. If I click it, it takes me to AT&T and plays the VM. Like it should.

What’s missing is some kind of indicator ( you guys call it a ‘badge’ I suppose) on my Home Screen. Or within the phone app.

Yes, I have all the options enabled under ‘Phone’ - Lock Screen, Notification Center, banners, the Badge is ON. Banner set to persistent. ALLOW is set to ON.

I get notifications of phone calls. Just nothing that’s says ‘Hey, there’s a VM’.
