Apple watch will not connect via bluetooth to BMW

I've made multiple attempts to connect my Apple Watch Series 6 w/cellular to my 2015 BMW 328i. The watch detects the BMW. After I select the BMW ID on the watch bluetooth screen, I see a connection attempt. The BMW recognizes the attempt and provides a pin number, which is then displayed by the watch. However, each time I confirm the pin number, the BMW says "failed to connect" and "retry".

I want to be able to use my watch in the car without having my Iphone present. By comparison, I was able to connect the watch to my Lexus RX on the first try. Other than selling the BMW and getting a second Lexus, is there any fix to this problem?
