How to erase a hard drive

Does anyone know how to erase/destroy the hard drive of an old iMac? It's an Intel core 2 Duo-20 inch wide screen.

Restart with the Command and R keys held down, or insert a compatible Mac OS X install DVD and restart with the Option key held down, and use the Disk Utility to erase it.

If it's running 10.6.8 or earlier, or doesn't have an OS installed, use the DVD.
