Safari for Mac OS- Clicking a twitter link causes multiple tabs to open

When clinking a link to go to twitter, either a link from a website, or a follow user link from an embedded tweet on a web page , Safari opens a series of repeating tabs rapidly that all read error 404. It will open about one tab every second until I force quit. (If there's keyboard shortcut to stop loading a page, I don't know it.) No other browser does this I have, either Brave or Firefox, will do this
