Eliminate voicemail password pop-up

My iPhone 3GS gives me a popup and asks me for a voicemail password numerous times during the day. I do not have a voicemail password--I can retrieve my messages just fine--and don't want one. How can I get this annoying popup to go away?

How do you retrieve your voicemail without a password? Before the iPhone when I had to call to access my voicemail, I had to enter my chosen password - 4 digits. If a password wasn't required, I wasn't aware the option was available.

With visual voicemail access with the iPhone, your chosen password only needs to be entered once when it is set up.
