Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

"I had the same issue, what I found was that my Virus Protection software "Kaspersky" had set the privacy setting to block the Webcam, changed it to Allow Webcam and now its ok. I didn't have this issue when using previous versions of Mac OS, for those that's having an issue it might be worth a look"

This worked for me:


Route 1 - verify that "camera is allowed" for your user account:


System Preferences (window)

Screen Time (icon)

Content & Privacy (left panel)

Apps (tab)

Allow (section): Camera


Route 2 - Update to Big Sur 11.1


Tip: update in Safe Mode (hold Shift key while booting). Don't rely on the "15 minutes install time", it will take 1+ hour, if you have an encrypted disk, be patient :-)

Very disappointed when I have no camera for almost month for remote-working.


I keep looking into anything related to camera inside MacBook, and found something strange: there is a process running as "AppleCameraAssistant" when my SystemReport/Hardware/Camera showed: "No video capture devices were found."


So how this happened and is it normal?? May be this is a hint for a solve?

sorry no solution here. just sharing that I thought I was alone. I have a 13in MBP 2017 TouchBar. Since bigsur upgrade the webcam just stopped working.

I have tried the usual recommendations:

  1. Reset SMC
  2. Reset NVRAM and PRAM.
  3. SafeMode
  4. fresh Big Sur install


I use my camera every work day, I remember clearly it stopped working right after updating to bigsur... not nice Apple :-(

I turned on my. 2019 MBP last night to discover the same issue. I have been running Big Sur since it was originally released and only experienced this problem last night. Talked to support and updated my software. rebooted. went into safe mode force quit through terminal and nothing seems to be fixing the problem. I really do not want to send it in for an appointment as classes resume on Monday through zoom.

Anyone have any luck yet?
