Apple Watch won’t automatically switch to cellular when away from iPhone

If I leave the house without my iPhone my iWatch show Disconnected and does not automatically switch to cellular. This can easily be replicated by switching my phone to Airplane mode and switching off WiFi on the watch.

The only solution I can find is to go into Settings/Mobile Data on the watch, wait for the status to say connected then exit. Sometimes even when it says connected in Mobile Data the watch remains disconnected and I have to switch off and on again.

Both watch and phone are on the latest software (7.1 and 14.2).

I have to do this daily and it’s becoming a pain. Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

I have the IWatch 6 cellular version.

Once I’ve messed about the the settings I can usually rely on cellular working for the rest of the day unless I use airplane mode.

My problem is it should “just work”, I shouldn’t have to mess about every day telling cellular to activate when my phone isn’t around or switch the watch off and on again to force the change. Isn’t that the point of a cellular watch?

Instinct tells me it’s a Watch OS issue handing off WiFi to cellular, but I wondered if anyone else has the same issue and/or a fix?

Do you have the cellular version of the watch?.

If you have the GPS only version of the watch you have to have the phone with you in order to make calls and send texts.
