In System Preferences>Fax & Print, Right click or Control+click on the Printers list Sidebar, choose Reset Printing System.

if you hold option and click the "-" tab it resets the printing system.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).

Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.

Reboot.

Upgrading your OS is pushed but this can knock out older applications which is something they don't advertise and can lead to great expense. I'm now trying to revert back to my previous OS so that I can run the DPS I had going without acquiring updated software as well. Compatibility problems abound when you change your OS. HP might have a fix? Check out their site but no guarantees.
