If your ear is hitting the Mute button, then it would seem the proximity sensor is not turning off the screen when you bring your phone up to your ear when it is supposed to. Do you have a case on the iPhone? Do you have a screen protector on the iPhone, and if so, does it have a notch cutout in the top center. The proximity sensor is near the front facing camera. Make sure that area is clean and free of any obstructions. Then restart your iPhone and test with a call.
