For some bizarre reason, I have names of Contact Groups showing up on my iPad and iPhone that I can not delete. These Groups are listed under the device (iPad or iPhone), not under iCloud (see attached screen shot). There are no members in any of these groups. They are old and have not been used for a long time (probably since iCloud was a thing...). I cannot find any way to delete these groups that are no longer useful! Help!

Support figured it out for me. Turns out I had to go in via iCloud contacts, not via email, to disable contacts, delete from devices and then re-enable. Yay! Problem solved! (And the chat with support feature is the best invention ever...)

Glad you got it resolved. And thanks for posting the resolution. It may help someone else.
Do you have any other email accounts on your device? The groups may be related to those accounts. If so, you'll need to edit them however those providers allow you to.

Have you tried — Delete or change a group of contacts on iCloud.com - Apple Support?
I would suggest deleting the other email accounts, turning your phone off and then back on and adding the accounts back.
yes! Of course only the Groups listed under iCloud appear on the iCloud website, but editing, adding and deleting items and groups there have no impact on the groups that are showing up under the iPad and iPhone lists on those respective devices.
I do have two other email accounts on my devices, but i checked and the gmail account does not have the contacts connected and i switched off the earthlink account and it made no difference.
Just tried the above steps, to no avail. Drat. I guess I’m just stuck with phantom groups with no members on my devices for the time being!
