The mail initially worked but after I installed Microsoft Office 2019 in the same sitting , mail crashes at every attempt to open it. I put my old Office in the trash with no effect

All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for Intego and follow to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and then restart normally.

uninstalled netupdate antiviral apps-had to use app cleaner & uninstaller PRO, also deleted the programs that couldn't run on my new Big Sur for i Mac. The mail program refuses to launch. Now I can't get into the apple support group via safari-it tells me that my time is out. This response is from my Mac Book air
Please post a fresh Etrecheck report of your system. It is possible the AV apps has damaged Mac OS. I can look in the new report to see if all parts of the AV apps are gone.
The problem was resolved today with an update to Big Sur
