MacBook Pro screen goes black with low battery icon

When starting all the start tasks work fine and the Start screen comes up fine and then immediately the screen goes black and the low battery icon appears. I then connect to the power cord and a few seconds pass the Start screen appears again with the battery icon is at 100%. Then everything works fine. This has just started to happen after upgrading to Big Sur.

This only happens after recharging the battery overnight and starting up the following morning. The battery does seems to get low a lot faster since the Big Sur upgrade. The battery now indicates that service is recommended. That is new too since the Big Sur upgrade.

Any suggestions?

I've MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) and I’m facing the exact same problem. Before the update, it’s working totally fine but updating to Big Sur was the biggest mistake I did. Earlier this problem was rare but now it happens frequently which has started irritating me. Every time I start my MacBook I wish not to get that black screen. Even if my MacBook has a charge above 70-80%, it still shows that low battery icon on the black screen when I press the power button. I checked my battery’s health, which is currently showing as NORMAL and I also checked my charge cycle which is around 85 at the moment. I thought that reinstalling the software would fix this problem, So I reinstalled the Big Sur through MacOS RECOVERY but the hard work didn’t pay off and the problem was still there. Then I thought of giving it a second try, So this time I choose to hard reset my MacBook through DISK utilities in MacOS RECOVERY and that too went in vain and now I’m super irritated by this OS. I'm trying to find a solution to this problem but can’t find one.

Hello cd_1208,

We understand that you have some concerns related to your battery. Depending on the age of your Mac and usage over time, the battery may be at a point where it's considered degraded. As outlined at Battery Service and Recycling: "Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 400 complete charge cycles." You can find this info under the Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report > Power.

Further info on batteries can be found here: Check the condition of your Mac notebook’s battery
