AAC re-coded when transferring to AirPods over BT?

Assume there's an audio file in AAC format on my iPhone that I'd like to listen with AirPods? The audio data transfer codec is also AAC. So will the original AAC stream be re-coded (i.e. re-compressed) to be transferred to AirPods over Bluetooth, or it will be transferred to AirPods as it is in the original file, without any re-compression?
