Do HomePods as speakers also work with Apple TV HD?

The article says Apple TV 4K, but since Apple TV HD is still sold does it also allow me to use two HomePods as speakers?

Yes, you can AirPlay from Apple TV 4 HD to one or more HomePods. The full surround sound experience is only available with Apple TV 4K, but even with my older HD model they still sound great, much richer than the speakers built into the TV.

Hello AppleResearcher,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you have an Apple TV HD and want to use a pair of HomePods as speakers for a theater experience. We would refer you to the following support article for setting up home theater audio and it specifies that it needs an Apple TV 4K.

Ah yes, not entirely intuitive. While you have content playing give a long press on TV button to bring up the user switch and AirPlay menu. Tap on Apple TV HD. From there you should be able to select your HomePods, and once selected, reselect the TV Speakers too should you wish. Tapping Menu twice should get you back to your programme.

The Siri button on the TV remote should also respond to something like "Play on HomePod" and "Stop playing on HomePod".
