Big Sur Update not Working

Big Sur Update Not Working

Hey,

Tried updating to Big Sur on my Macbook Air today and it has not been working. I’ve tried three times and all times it has given me the error when it comes close to finishing saying “an error occurred preparing the software update” it then gives me two windows one saying choose startup disk and a macos update assistant that both never load. I have tried to fix this but no fix has worked for me yet, including holding down options and opening a disk boot screen and choosing the macintosh hd disk, which still didn’t end up working for me. So, I am unable to get out of updating even though it doesn’t work. I was wondering if I could get some help as I just want to be able to use my Mac but it won’t work

I had the same problem. Originally I couldn't get it to load at all. I rang Apple tech support and we solved it. The first thing to do is shut down the MacBook for 5 minutes then try again. It didn't work - it downloaded the 3.69 Gb but hung at the 10 minute preparation phase.

Apple support then said to close down the MacBook again and restart in safe mode. This is done by keeping the shift key pressed just after you re-start the Macbook. I then started the update again and it went all the way through.

I'm now updated to Big Sur 11.2. The support guy did say that he had had a look and there were other people with exactly the same problem. Hope this helps.

This is not Apple support and we do not work for Apple, so threats are not very helpful on an online user to user volunteer site. And it would not be "my" or "our" manager.

Having said that: she does have a backup, right? Everyone needs to have a backup. If you do, you can revert.

I have also heard that the latest update is now ok, but I cannot be 100% sure about that, so it may be best to check with actual Apple support to make sure.

And, you need to check before you download something. I never do automatic downloads - I always check and do as much research as I can beforehand.

This is happening to me too! I have a 2013/2014 MacBook Pro and can’t get out of the update loop. So far, I’ve let it try and fail twice. I tried both methods to get into safe mode and it looked like it was working but I’m back on the black update loading screen. I’ve spent a couple hours on this tonight and can’t escape the update. I’ve shut down my computer for the night. What can I do to get out of this and use my laptop on the previous operating system?

Hi, did you take your laptop directly to apple or apple authorised service? I have the same problem and talked to apple. They couldn't fix it over the online chat so they booked an appointment for me to drop the laptop off at an authorised service but I'm worried they will charge me a lot of money for it. The apple shops where I live are all closed due to covid.

Thanks!

Thanks you ! 😇😇😁😁🆘🆘

i thought this might be the thing to do. I’m going to use my daughters MBAir and download BigSur and then install it onto the broken one. If that does not work, I’ll install it onto a hard drive. So disappointing and that Apple allows this is strange. And for a UK residents with the average internet BT speed of a snail. This is so frustrating. Fed up. 🙄🥺😳😬

thank you !
