Does iMessage use your texts?

SMS/MMS (green) are between two or more people who are not using Apple devices (or if they are, not logged into iMessage). They will use your SMS allowance if your carrier has given you a limit. MMS messages use cellular data even if you are on WiFi.

Generally, iMessage and Texts (SMS) are two different things ... iMessage uses the internet (wifi or data) while SMS uses your carrier ( cellular plan ... cellular technology)
