Emojis on iPhone XR

Please help, I can't find these in messages or WhatsApp, and they used to be so easy. There is no smiley face to the left of the input box on either.. I've switched off and back on checked, settings, general, keyboard, then keyboards >2 which lists English (UK) then underneath Emoji. If I tap edit, the only thing I can do is delete Emoji. There is no Emoji under "add new keyboard", just a list of different Countries.

It's literally driving me mad. I don't use them much, but sometimes it's just nice to end a conversation with a thumbs up. Any help will be really appreciated.
