Apple Mail Not downloading Emails in Exchange

User setup as an Exchange account in Apple Mail using Microsoft Office 365 MFA app password.

Mail sometimes doesn't download and I notice Mail says Moving Messages in the lower left during this time. User is receiving mail in Outlook on the web without issue.

Connection doctor shows connection is fine and when I log connections nothing shows up.

Sometimes when I click on the activity menu there are items there other times not. There is nothing in the activity window when the Moving Messages is happening.

My troubleshooting so far has been to delete and recreate the Exchange account and rebuild the entire database.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for any assistance.

Hello laynestaley123,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

Based on what you mentioned, you are having some trouble with how Microsoft Exchange is being sent or received. The Mail app is more of a conduit for how your actual account is configured. If you are not receiving emails to Mail, it may not be configured according to what's on the main server. To make sure you get all the necessary configurations, you may need to reach out to Microsoft's support. However, there are a few links that may help listed below.

Best wishes!

Well my issue is I'd like to investigate the Apple product before I try and work with Microsoft any further - specifically why the activity area in the lower left corner of Apple Mail doesn't match the Activity window. I have setup mail per the specs outlined by Microsoft. It's really very complicated.

As I mentioned connection Doctor shows the connection as fine and therefore the configuration seems to be fine. This seems to be an Apple Mail software issue.

Thanks for any further assistance.

This has been doing this for a week on all 3 of my Apple computers. I am really upset about this since I use them for work and I have to rely on Outlook to see what emails I am missing. It sometimes comes back to life, like all day this Sunday (Dec 13) and then it died again yesterday early morning. I contacted Apple support and they were useless, and contacted Microsoft which was just as useless. Both point the blame to each other. My iPhone and iPad Apple mail works perfectly with Exchange, so why not on MacOS???

it does seem like a pretty common issue as I have google searched everywhere for answers. I plan on opening a ticket with Apple yet I too expect it not to go anywhere. I've tried all the solutions offered in the forums including deleting and re-adding account and the issues persist. There's some setting combination that will solve it yet no one seems to know a permanent fix. If someone could tell me where the logs were I could maybe track down the issue based on what folders were "syncing" (they don't really sync yet say they are)....

I've been experiencing the same exact problem, intermittently, for the past week or two. FYI, I'm running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 on my MacBook Pro. This has made Mail on my Mac virtually useless, as I can't trust it to display the latest mail in my Inbox. Therefore, I've moved to Outlook for the time being (as many other people have done), as it reliably talks to the Exchange server and displays my latest incoming messages. I've used Mail on my Mac for years and years, and this is a major inconvenience, so I'll be watching this forum for any breakthrough solutions.

For an update, one of my three computers has finally come back to life when it comes to Apple mail with exchange. It’s the fastest one of the three, so I don’t know if that has it anything to do with it. It is not showing me mail instantaneously but it pretty much updates itself every few minutes, even though I have it set to automatically send and show up immediately. Somebody at Microsoft reached out to me via email and asked me what was going on and if it was happening still, and I told him it was. I did tell him that one computer seems to be working more or less. Still isn’t right. I am loading the new beta for Big Sur tonight on one of the ones that is not working to see if that does anything.

Im still working slowly with Apple support. I sent them logs from the affected computer and am waiting to hear back.

It seems like just leaving the Mail app open for weeks without really using it may have fixed the issue.

That said when I go to the activity monitor nothing shows and status bar is always downloading 1-20 messages that never show up in my Inbox - user does get emails now when the status bar shows "Downloading" yet now a new issue is there is no running total of new, unread messages in the Mail GUI.

I'll update if I hear anything from Apple.
