Old iTunes folder to Catalina or Big Sur Music.app

FYI. I have tested how to best import an old iTunes folder to the Music.app on a cleanly installed Big Sur (Catalina was the same but I skipped it). My current "iTunes" folder in Mojave was created 2006 (15 GB folder containing 1800 songs).

With my setup the Music.app could successfully parse the old “iTunes Library.itl” and convert it to the new “Music Library.musiclibrary”.

In that process the Music.app wanted to create a new mainly empty “Music” folder. I want all stuff in the same folder so I manually organised the old iTunes folder to the new Music.app layout:

~/Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary

~/Music/Music/Media/Music/[imported and downloaded artists/albums]

~/Music/Music/Media/Automatically Add to Music/ <- created automatically

~/Music/Music/Media/Downloads-Music/ <- created after authorisation (Catalina)

Convert old iTunes folder to the new folder structure:

0. In the old macOS iTunes.app check the song count (View > Show Status Bar) so you can compare it in the new Music.app.

1. Copy the old "iTunes" folder to macOS 11.0 Big Sur ~/Music/ folder and rename it "Music".

2. Option-start macOS 11.0 Big Sur Music.app and choose the old ~/Music/Music/iTunes Library.itl as a library. Music.app prompts to create a new “Music 1” folder. Save it on the Desktop (or where ever because this folder is deleted at step #5).

3. Wait a while for the old library to load (check the song count via View > Show Status Bar).

4. Quit Music.app. Open “Music 1” folder created in step #2 and move "Music Library.musiclibrary" from it to the ~/Music/Music/ folder you renamed in step #1. Delete the temporary “Music 1” folder from the Desktop.

5. Inside ~/Music/Music/ folder create a new "Media" folder, rename the old "iTunes Music" folder to "Music" and move it to "Media" folder you just created.

6. Option-start macOS 11.0 Big Sur Music.app and choose the newly created and moved ~/Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary as a library.

7. Open Music.app > Preferences... > Files, click "Reset", "OK" and "Yes" to the alert "Would you like to move and rename the files in your new Media folder to match the "Keep Media folder organized" preference?".

8. Quit Music.app. Inside ~/Music/Music/Media/Music/ folder delete the "Automatically Add to iTunes" and "Automatically Add to Music" folders after verifying they are empty (a new "Automatically Add to Music" was created in step #7 in the upper folder).

9. Now you should have all imported songs available in the new Music.app with the new folder structure.

There are the following old iTunes files that AFAIK serve no purpose anymore and might be deleted. I am not yet sure whether the "Album Artwork" is still needed because the album art is still there even if it is trashed.

It just converts the old iTunes.app folder structure to the new Music.app default. I later fine-tuned the Music.app column view but have not checked how it differs from my old iTunes layout (I still have the old iTunes folder as a backup and plan to trash it after several months).

These instructions were AMAZING! When I upgraded from Mojave to Big Sur on my laptop a few weeks ago, the upgrade went super sideways. With regard to my music, this meant I was left with my Mojave iTunes folder on a backup external hard disk, and a completely clean install of Big Sur on my laptop with an empty Apple Music.

My music library is 48 Gig for 7000+ songs.

I followed these instructions and so far (a day later) everything I've checked and care about appears to have come through perfectly including playlists and ratings.

As reported by others, in Step 8 when I quit Apple Music, I got a popup "Saving Music Library....". I went and had dinner and when I came back maybe an hour later, it had completed successfully and quit properly. (So I don't know exactly how long it took, just that it was less than an hour.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I never would have figured this out on my own.

Sorry, but this did not work for me. I am trying to import an old iTunes library/folder from MacOs 10.6.8. Perhaps this requires a different strategy? When I select the file you mention (iTunes Library.itl), I get the error message "iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid library. Please choose another". Is my situation hopeless? Because I had to do a clean install of BigSur, I didn't have the opportunity to let the new OS convert the iTunes library. I'd appreciate your advice...

Thank you so much for testing this and sharing! I got a new MacBook with Big Sur and the Music app and was concerned I would loose a music collection it took years to collect.

I was running El Capitan on my old MacBook with my iTunes .itl file on my computer but the media files on an external hard drive. So around step 7 things got a bit different but I fumbled through and music.app was recognizing the files ok. Funnily enough it didn't find 140 of the 16,495 songs at first but after several hours of playing music and using the app with no other apparent background processes, it finally found the remaining files. Weird. I'll never know what files they were. None of it took an exceptional amount of time except processing the artwork.

If any one is wondering I tried the same process for my movies and home videos and the new TV.app using a copy of the ituneslibrary.itl file from my original iTunes library. The creation and swapping process for the TV library.tvlibrary file was the same as above.

Thanks again!

Hi captsri,

YMMV obviously at #5 and #8 because I didn't have an old "iTunes Media" folder. My goal was to manually create the current Music.app default folder structure.

BTW just yesterday I cleanly installed Big Sur on my main internal disk and copied an old iTunes folder to it. Although I myself had written that memo, I had to pay great attention to the many confusingly nested "Music" folders.

First fix the name of your Music library. With Music closed rename the folder ~/Music/Music 1 as ~/Music/Music

Copying 29Gb of data would be likely to take some time. I suggest seeing if you can get away with moving the folder rather than consolidating the library. With Music closed move the folder ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music inside ~/Music/Music/Media. If the folder Media doesn't exist then create it. If it already contains a folder called Music rename that as Music1 first. Launch Music and confirm that your content is still accessible. If so use Music > Preferences > Files and reset the media folder to ~/Music/Music/Media. Your Music library should now be self contained, although there could still be legacy iTunes content such as audiobooks, movies, podcasts, TV shows, etc. that needs reorganizing elsewhere with the new apps. If for any reason your content isn't accessible after moving the Music folder then close Music and put it back where it came from.

This didn’t work for me.

At Step 3 I get the rainbow wheel of death for over 4 hours (my library is very large - 180GB).

Is there any other way to ‘save’ the iTunes library I’ve been compiling for a decade?

Can I install an old version of iTunes on Big Sur and use that as my default program?

Any advice or help would be much appreciated

If you're trying to get to the default layout of a music library then your library file should be:

~/Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary.

and your media folder should be:

~/Music/Music/Media

Like iTunes, Music doesn't scan the media folder to see what should be added or removed from the library to match it. You can use File > Add to Library > {Media Folder} to import any music content in the media folder than isn't already known to the library. Video content should be organized under ~/Movies/TV/Media. Podcasts and audiobooks can be imported into Podcasts and Books respectively.

Your old iTunes library is very big and nonconsolidated with a large amount of playlists. In comparison my iTunes setup was very small and simple with only one empty playlist.

So you may have to try to tune the workflow to match your setup. I have never used Apple's Migration Assistant and wonder how it converts the old iTunes folder to Music.app and whether the converted folder structure is the same compared to a Music.app library built from scratch which my workflow mimics. With my setup Music.app could convert the old iTunes Library.itl to its new Music Library.musiclibrary format and then pick and continue to use it pointing to the Music folder containing the songs.

But if all else fails, you might have to just import plain media folders to Music.app although you then lose play count and last played info and have to re-build the playlists.

> In my case is the intention of step 5 to rename the old "iTunes Media" folder - where all my music and relevant folders reside - to simply "Media"?

> So should I

I am sorry but my cookbook refers to my success in converting my old iTunes folder structure to the new Music.app default folder structure. Other people's folders might be named somewhat differently if they have used different iTunes versions in there past. I tried several iterations before really committing that workflow with my setup in Big Sur. I guess other people's setups might wildly differ from my old simple oldish but smallish iTunes folder.

I have never used Migration Assistant so I don't know how well that might convert old iTunes folders to the new Music.app. I just wanted to imitate the new default folder structure and carry on from that. This might be overkill for most people.

So run some tests with your backup files and report how it works for you. :-)
