How do I control a Bose Wave Music System III with apple TV remote?

I have a Bose Wave Music System III hooked up to my television and it sounds incredible. Unfortunately I am sick of always having to use the Bose’s crappy little squishy bubble remote buttons to change volume. When I bought an Apple Tv 4K I was thrilled to find that you can train it to recognize any remote control by pointing it at the unit and using volume up and down. The Wave Music System III uses an IR remote but when I point it at the apple tv and hold either volume button down during the learning process, the apple tv doesn’t respond at all. It just continues to tell me to hold down the volume button until it gets sick of waiting tells me it didn’t detect a remote control signal. People have said that the only way they could get a universal remote to work with a Bose radio is to use one with learning capabilities since Bose never released any remote codes. I guess I’m just confused why those remotes can learn the unique ir signals bose uses but the Apple Tv can’t.
