DVD reading from non 'finalized' disk

Several years ago I backed up home videos to DVD burning device I no longer own. the process involved transferring files to DVD and then, when full, finalizing the disk. I don't know if this is the equivalent of burning a disk. These disks can be read by DVD viewer. However, some disks with precious files can not be read. When I insert them I get a dialog indicating I am inserting a blank disk. I believe these disks were not finalized. My question - is there a way to finalize them and make them readable? can data be recovered from such disks? I am using a MacBook Pro running BigSur, and reading disks using an external superdrive model A1379 via USB adapter. thank you for any help.!
