Should Apple Bring back the iPod Classic in 2021?

2021 is the iPod's 20th anniversary, and I feel like Apple should bring back the iPod Classic to celebrate the iPod brand lasting this long. I mean, they have done this in the past with the 20th anniversary Macintosh, so why not the iPod Classic?

Should they? Absolutely. It's a no-brainer. Will they? Probably not. Apple has proven over the past 10+ years that they have no interest in hearing what their customers want. They are far more focused on telling their customers what they want.

"You can't invest money on manufacturing something nobody won't buy." Can't argue with that logic! But seriously, you make a lot of great points. You really do. But the question isn't "Should Apple bring back the iPod Classic in 2021, and make it a permanent part of their product line going forward?" Instead, the question is "Should Apple bring back the iPod Classic in 2021 as a 20th Anniversary limited edition?" The answer to that question is a resounding yes. There would be very little investment involved, since they already have the technology. And it would be profitable, as there are enough of us who would jump at the opportunity to own a brand new iPod Classic. In other words, this would be a low-risk, quick infusion of cash to Apple.

We supposed to avoid speculation on these forums and stick to technical topics, but in my opinion Apple are not going to revisit the past. Despite the label the TAM didn't do that either. Apple's products tie in with Apple's services. There is no business case for rereleasing the classic, notwithstanding the small numbers that might still want one.

There's one way to hear what customers want: sales. People weren't buying iPods anymore and that's why Apple discontinued it. It was replaced by the iPhone simply because people were buying the iPhones instead of iPods. You can't invest money on manufacturing something nobody won't buy. That is waste. I am an iPod fan and I have my own collection, but let's be fair, it's worth it only for fans and therefore not profitable.

I get it. I agree with you and I hope they do. I also want a brand new limited edition iPod Classic with clickwheel and everything.

But I think there's something that people don't realize. Why did Apple continue to sell the iPod Classic until 2014 when they already had the iPhone and the iPod touch? Because it was possible to cut costs and have a device with big storage capacity.

Let's suppose the iPod touch didn't exist. What would we probably asking for the iPod 20th anniversary edition? I guess probably something like the iPod touch, with internet connectivity, bluetooth, Apple Music, iOS apps, 256GB and so on.

My point is: I think that we take the iPod touch for granted. Besides its poor battery performance and lack of clickwheel, it is still a great iPod. It's got even the big storage. And we can buy that today for a very reasonable price I'd say.

You've probably seen this video from DankPods already, but it's worth to mention it because he shows this very well and I agree.
