I've just become the proud owner of a MacBook Air M1 and am in the process of transferring many mov files of my grandson, some dating back to 2010 to the new machine but find they will not run. Can anyone tell me how they can be converted to a viewable format?

The frequently answered answer here is to use VLC, Handbrake, ffmpeg etc to convert old codecs to H.264 or H.265 (HEVC). Or use Mojave or older and QT Player 7, MPEG Streamclip etc to convert them before updating to new macOS.
