Download apps to 3rd Gen Apple TV

I just dusted off an old 3rd Gen Apple TV and trying to install a few apps to watch movies and shows (HBO, Prime, AT&T, Netflix, etc). I am reading a lot of support content that the 3rd Gen does not have the App Store, which I remember was true when I first bought the device. However, I remember that we used to download the apps to our phones and then it magically appeared on Apple TV. I know I will never be able to get apps directly on the 3rd Gen but how do I (or can I) do it the original way when the 3rd Gen first came out?

You might well have bought it because, back then, we didn't expect everything to be able to download apps. And yes, Apple pushed dozens of channels to the ATV 3.

If you don't want to spend as much money as the ATV 4 costs, look at Roku and Fire TV Sticks. They are much cheaper.

I'm not sure what you're remembering as I don't' think it ever worked that way. Apps on the ATVs 2 and 3 were pushed from Apple. There is no way to add apps to the yourself.
