Reverting a Mac Mini running Sierra to El Capitan

(I prev posted a Q like this w/ incorrect info - this is the correct version.)

I have a 2014 mac mini running Sierra. I need to take the machine back to El Capitan to more fully run some legacy software. I can't wipe the machine clean and reinstall El Capitan because, even tho I have the install discs from the legacy software, they have stopped supporting it and shut down web/phone authentication so the best I will get is a 10 day trial period.

Is there a way to take a mac mini on Sierra back to El Capitan w/o disturbing apps etc?

I will get rid of other apps that are too modern for Sierra if this is poss

thanks for all help / guidance

Thanks for both replies.

If I format an external drive w/ El Capitan, would I be able to start up w/ that drive and then open legacy apps on my Mac mini (that had been updated to Hi Sierra)?

My instinct is that I can't... but I'm hoping to be wrong.

And I couldnt move the apps to the El Capitan drive because that will require re-authentication, which is where'd the process would again hit a brick wall.

Thanks

Duane
