Is there a setting where only people in my contacts can text me?For instance,could the setting not make my phone ding when I get a text?

By phone, yes. Go to Settings/Phone and turn on Silence Unknown Callers. Then all calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail. There is no equivalent for email, and only limited options for texts. Go to Settings/Messages/Unknown & Spam. Turn on Filter Unknown Senders. This will not block them, but will put them in a different list in the Messages app.


In that same place you can install a spam blocking app for SMS such as nomorobo (which also works for phone calls, but is not needed if you use Silence Unknown Callers.


The one downside of Silence Unknown Callers is calls from people you might want to hear from, such as your bank or your doctor will go to voicemail.
