Gift Certificate not activated

I get an error message when I try to redeem an apple gift card.

Error: The Gift Certificate or Prepaid Card code you entered has not been properly activated.

How do I remedy this error?

Ask the people at the store the gift card came from or the iTunes Store staff for assistance.
