No external audio on new M1 chip Mac mini

I just bought a brand new mini current version and I can only get audio thru bluetooth headphones, plug in headphones but if I plug external speakers I am unable to use them. Why is this. The plug in headphones work just fine. I tried a usb c headphone adapter and that does not either. WTF?

Hi NoAudiowithmacmini,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand your external speakers are not working as expected with your Mac. We're happy to provide some information to help.

We want to share the resource below with you as this goes over selecting/changing the audio output. Are you able to see the speakers as an option when connected?

Change the sound output settings on Mac

Also, you may want to check with the speaker manufacturer regarding compatibility as you're able to use headphones without issue.

Thanks.
