Transferring my old phone number to the iphone12

Do I need to transfer the SIM card from my old iPhone to the new iphone12 in order to keep the same phone number?

iPhone 7, iOS 14

Unless you were given a new SIM by your carrier, yes. You may need a new SIM to get 5G service on your new phone. You number shouldn't change.
