Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Ever since I've bought this Mac, the disk has been oddly filled with a lot of "ghost space".

To elaborate, my MacBook Pro, ever since it's been bought, has had a lot of its disk space taken up by, weirdly enough, nothing. Look at this and what I have circled:

Any fix for this?

MacBook Pro 13″, 10.15

Looks like at some point you have tried erasing your Disk and reinstalling Catalina.

but instead of erasing the Disk you erased a Volume.

Installing Catalina effectively splits your SSD to two Volumes

Macintosh HD for the System and Macintosh HD - Data for your files.

When you did the erase you only erased one Volume and then installed Catalina back

onto that Volume which then was split to Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data

leaving the original Macintosh HD - Data. so now you have three Volumes.

If you want to get rid of this situation you would have to erase your mac again

but this time erase the disk and then reinstall Catalina.

To erase your Disk open Disk Utility now click on View in the menubar

and select Show All Devices.

Now you will see in the left hand panel your Disk and its indented Volumes.

Highlight the Disk (probably called Apple SDD.......) and click on Erase

Give the Disk a name

Format: APFS

Scheme: GUID Partition Map

Click Erase

When done quit Disk Utility

Now reinstall Catalina, when installed you can restore your personal data

from the backup you made prior to erasing. Do not restore any system folders

or library folders as you will put your mac back to the same situation as before.

The About This Mac> Storage display is often very wrong.

Try resetting your Spotlight database to see if it sorts it out.

How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac – Apple Support

Move the Macintosh HD (or the name you gave your disk) in to the Privacy panel.

Quit System Preferences.

Open System Preferences> Spotlight> Privacy highlight Macintosh HD and press the minus button.

The mac will start rebuilding the Spotlight index.

Check by clicking on Spotlight in the menubar and enter word, if it is indexing you should see a progress bar.

If re-indexing has not solved your problem then run this app, https://www.omnigroup.com/more

this will give an accurate account of the storage used. When the app has created its overview you can look at

the Users folder in the output and see what each user has stored, you can then delete files from there.

Do not delete any files or folders in any System or Library folders or any files you do not understand.
