The Apple TV remote can be set to control a soundbar through IR. If it doesn’t work automatically, then it can learn new devices.

On|off (wake|sleep) can be regulated through HDMI-CEC, but will not propagate through optical.

What kind of soundbar? Does it have HDMI-in? Does it have HDMI-in and HDMI-out?

Either connect as

Apple TV → TV → soundbar

or connect as

Apple TV → soundbar → TV

with passthrough for the audio or video for the middle device.

Thanks...the hook up will be Apple 4K via HDMI to tv...Sony sound bar to tv via optical connection. The question is, will the sony remote detect the sound bar and control the volume/on-off?
