how do I plug my iphone xr into the wall like normal with this lightning cable? Do I have to buy a new wall adapter?

Plug the Lightning end into the phone and plug the USB-C end into a USB-C power adapter. If you need to buy one, click on the following for one from the Apple online store: Buy 20W USB-C Power Adapter - Apple

Or if you have an older cable and and older power adapter from a previous iPhone, you can use those instead.
