Blue ring around picture

I’ve been looking for this answer for a long time every time I search for it I only find ambiguous links to pages that don’t really tell me anything I don’t already know. I think it’s for when you’re friend opens the app and is “online”

A straight answer would be great though.

I’d like an answer to this as well. This isn’t the large blue circle showing that they GPS is currently inaccurate. It is a blue highlight around the contact’s profile photo at times. Other times, the circle is grey.

I know this is driving me crazy. Sometimes it’s a blue circle, sometimes white, sometimes gray/black and sometimes blue and white! Have you noticed the different colors?

I thought this as well and tested it multiple times with different friends and phones. However, I couldn’t get it to duplicate consistently.

This is just a theory from what I’ve read online but I think the blue circle means they’re active on their phone but a grey circle around their picture means they aren’t on their phone
