Thanks

Apple Pages documents can be saved in iCloud - and by default if you choose to configure your iPad (and other devices) to do so. Microsoft Apps, such as word, can also store documents in (and share via) iCloud storage.
Be aware that whilst Pages is a capable Word processor App, many would argue that it is not a substitute for MS Word. Whilst MS Word for iPadOS is not as full-featured as its “desktop” counterparts, it is still very powerful - and provides features and capabilities not found in Apple Pages. MS Word is still seen, by the majority, as the de-facto word processing App.

Yes you can use it for word processing. Pages and Word are both available in the App Store for the iPad.
Apple Pages and Microsoft Word are available for iPad from the Apple App Store.

Word:
Capacity for the App itself is unlikely to materially affect usability and overall storage capacity of the iPad. Speed will not be influenced by your choice of Word Processing App(s).
You do however need to be aware that the storage capacity of the iPad cannot be changed - whatever storage capacity that you choose will be fixed for the life of the iPad. The basic 32GB model is very limited if you intend to keep documents and images on your iPad. Most contributors here would advise that you instead consider the next storage tier as a practical minimum specification - which, for iPad8, is 128GB.
Yes, of course, Peter.
Open App Store and download/install your preferred app(s).

Thanks for reply. Would it be easier to use pages on an Apple iPad instead of Word? In any event is there sufficient capacity for the software on this device? With Pages would files be saved on iCloud?
Thanks
Peter
Thanks for response. I want to be absolutely certain I can download either software onto iPad and create a letter and save it into a folder in the same way as I do on my Applemac
If I decide to use Word on the iPad is there sufficient memory capacity on the iPad and would it materially impact on the speed of the device?
Peter
One rather naive question. The iPad is a replacement for an earlier version and photos are saved on iCloud. Are the photos also saved on the actual iPad and taking up storage capacity?
Thanks
Peter
You have the ability to save documents in the Files app, or in your OneDrive if you use Word. Understand to be able to use the Word app to do word processing on the iPad, you must have a subscription to Office 365. That is also where you will get access to your OneDrive, and there is an app for that as well. Without an Office subscription, the Word app is for read only.
This would largely depend upon your specific iPad settings. If you are using Photos in iCloud, then you will have Photos uploaded to iCloud - from where they can be synchronised with your other Apple devices, or are accessible from other computers using a web browser.
If using Photos in iCloud, you will have either a full resolution or lower resolution image saved in your local iPad storage.
When setting-up your new iPad as a replacement for your old iPad, you can easily transfer your existing data/documents/photos to the new iPad. More information about transferring data between devices can be found here:

If it is your intention to retire/decommission your old iPad, subsequent to transferring your data, you may wish to consider the correct process to erase the old iPad prior to potential disposal:
