Apple iPad 10.2 WiFi 8th Generation -2020

I have purchased as a gift an ipad. Do you know if its possible to occasionally use this for word processing. Could I for example download Pages or Word.

Thanks

Peter

Apple Pages documents can be saved in iCloud - and by default if you choose to configure your iPad (and other devices) to do so. Microsoft Apps, such as word, can also store documents in (and share via) iCloud storage.

Be aware that whilst Pages is a capable Word processor App, many would argue that it is not a substitute for MS Word. Whilst MS Word for iPadOS is not as full-featured as its “desktop” counterparts, it is still very powerful - and provides features and capabilities not found in Apple Pages. MS Word is still seen, by the majority, as the de-facto word processing App.

Capacity for the App itself is unlikely to materially affect usability and overall storage capacity of the iPad. Speed will not be influenced by your choice of Word Processing App(s).

You do however need to be aware that the storage capacity of the iPad cannot be changed - whatever storage capacity that you choose will be fixed for the life of the iPad. The basic 32GB model is very limited if you intend to keep documents and images on your iPad. Most contributors here would advise that you instead consider the next storage tier as a practical minimum specification - which, for iPad8, is 128GB.

You have the ability to save documents in the Files app, or in your OneDrive if you use Word. Understand to be able to use the Word app to do word processing on the iPad, you must have a subscription to Office 365. That is also where you will get access to your OneDrive, and there is an app for that as well. Without an Office subscription, the Word app is for read only.

This would largely depend upon your specific iPad settings. If you are using Photos in iCloud, then you will have Photos uploaded to iCloud - from where they can be synchronised with your other Apple devices, or are accessible from other computers using a web browser.

If using Photos in iCloud, you will have either a full resolution or lower resolution image saved in your local iPad storage.
