Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

The fact you have lost HDR means you still have the problem unfortunately. I have tried different ports and adapters and when you switch to a new adapter, it will generally work for a few days. Then at random when I wake from sleep, it will think the monitor is only capable of 1080p @30hz or something silly.

I then go through the process of turning everything off, unplugging everything and then turning back on, plugging the monitors back in.

For me this has been very reliable. Very fast monitor detection, no glitches or anomalies. From plugging it in - in december, so now running for over a month stable. I did try USB-C cables, and was running USB-C to DP before with no luck, so its not like it was my first try fixing the issue - nothing else seemed to work. That is why I vouch by it.

Regarding HDR - I do not unfortunately know if and what are hardware specs to transfer HDR over such conversion, it is entirely possible the dongle just doesnt support it, or it could be the OS bug still. I dont need it and am happy for a stable experience I left it at that.

Still s..t job by Apple to break something that wasnt broken, but alas.

This issue started December 14th with the release of 11.1. After 45 days of using bandaids to run my external monitors the OS fix I was hoping for 11.2 arrived on February 1st. I am extremely frustrated this was not addressed. We are talking the latest 2020 16" MacBook here. It's practically brand new! Are you telling me that there is no employee on the Apple campus that is running the latest 16" MacBook with external 4k monitors? Seems every update takes 30-45 days to be released to the public. My productivity has taken a huge hit due to this issue. I can't wait that long.

Installed 11.2 today on my iMac 2020 that has a BenQ SW271 connected via a USB C to USB C cable that came with the BenQ.

I've now power cycled the iMac and BenQ three times and each time on restarting it has successfully detected the BenQ and configured the interface for 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz. I've got the BenQ now configured for Display Port 1.4 support too.

The issues with 'No signal detected' / 60Hz not available / HDR mode being enabled, fingers-crossed, seem to have gone with the update to 11.2.

I hope this continues as this problem has been really, really frustrating.

For me, the problem was not fixed after upgrading from macOS Big Sur 11.1 to macOS Big Sur 11.2.

macOS Big Sur 11.2 on MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) does not detect the correct display modes for the Philips 346P1CRH/00 display, allowing only non-native display modes. This problem does not exist on earlier macOS versions or on other operating systems.

I contacted Apple support multiple times about this, since the introduction of this problem with the release macOS Big Sur 11.1. Still no fix. No communication from Apple about this issue either, even though it affects many customers. I will have to downgrade to macOS Catalina 10.15. This is very disappointing.

You got lucky then.

My combination of MacMini M1 with 11.2 and BenQ PD2720U still does NOT support 60Hz above 720p scaling when connected via TB3! Tried all suggestions, including lowering the DP version to 1.2 in the monitor.

On the other hand, my son's MBP13" 2018 works just fine via TB3 on the same monitor, even after upgrading from 11.0 to 11.2 directly.

Today I installed macOS 11.2 on a MBP 16“ with an external monitor USB-C LG 32UD99-W.

The ‚highest‘ resolution in the external monitor is now „1080p“ (1920 x 1080, 60 Hz) whereas before I used to use a resolution of 2880 x 1620, 60 Hz, or higher. The same problem plagued me already with 11.1 (and the last version that worked was 11.0.1).

From Apples support on Twitter I got the following tips for a "temporary" workaround:

a.) Reset the windowsever by removing a couple files. Please open Finder and from the menu bar select Go > Go To Folder to locate the following:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.XXXXX.plist (not always there)

Note: "XXXXXX" in the example above represents a variable string of letters and numbers.

b.) Please move those files to the trash. Then restart and reset the NVRAM using the steps found here: https://s.apple.com/dE4l1d7i4H

After performing the two steps as advised System Preferences > Display shows me more/all missing resolutions.

But the clocking (Hz) isn't correct (still to low) and after a reboot I have to perform the mentioned to steps again ...

I am holding my breath. I just updated to OS 11.2 and have 3440 x 1440. However, about a week or so ago I booted into this resolution and was elated for about two days. Then, I was back into low resolution once again. So I am holding my breath. FYI I am on an external ViewSonic and using a MacBook Pro, 2019, with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M and Intel UHD Graphics 630.

Crossing my fingers.

Run into this issue with a Macbook, Big Sur and a Viewsonic VP3881. Have tried a USB-C to HDMI, USB-C Hub with an HDMI port, no go. Have updated to 11.2, no go. Could not see on the monitor any DP settings to switch from 1.4 to 1.2 on DP, also don't have a DP adapter anyway. Maybe I will invest in a Satechi adapter that people have mentioned here. I'll check back on this thread to see if this gets solved by somebody, thanks!

Good news - i've managed to achieve maximum resolution by using this (fairly inexpensive) USB-C to HDMI adapter from amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075V5JK36/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Still no luck with USB-C to DP, though.

Not an ideal solution as I used to have my entire setup through 1 cable, instead of 2, but at least I finally have native resolution again!

For anyone else like me, with a monitor with an inbuilt KVM, you will run into some issues trying to run both usb-c and hdmi through the monitor as the MacBook will still detect 2 displays, despite it being one. The only solution I've found is to position the 2 monitors at an angle in the display arrangement settings, so the cursor doesn't run onto the "second screen" as often

Hope this helps! What a nightmare of a bug... shame on apple!

I have a late 2015 iMac 27 inch retina and have been using a HDMI cable without full resolution on my second ultra wide 34 inch MSI monitor since BigSur landed. I also have SwitchResx installed. I changed cables to a miniDP to DP and it must have tricked the system as now I can see a full suite of resolutions in SwitchResX. But when I move above 3440x1440 the second Monitor pixelates. At least I can see all resolutions in the list now for the second Monitor with is a 5k2k type with a LG panel. I couldn't see this before with. Above 3440x1440, the ultra wide aspect is not working as the Monitor thinks it is 27inch. This proves it is an Apple bug within BigSur. It also shows that the bug has to do with HDR as any resolution with HDR on does not work. I trying without HDR on and see if it helps. The new cable I tried is this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0140QEYEW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Two MacBook Air M1, one is 11.1, the other 11.2 and a mac mini. Gave up on dual external monitors for now.

After going to system preference>energy on the mini and system preferences>battery on the Airs, checking the box for « prevent computer from sleeping when monitor sleeps », rebooting and checking the box again (first reboot, box was unchecked on all three) and they all failed to work. Now one 4k external monitor works fine on all of them. They all are a bit slow to wake up with magic mouse and apple keyboard. But at least they don’t wake up to a kernel crash any more either.

As I posted previously, the Air with the Hyperdrive USB-C port expander worked better after plugging in both the HDMI and Display port. Today I disconnected the display port cable and it appears stable.

To get the mini to work I plugged in a 27 » HP xga monitor I had in storage. After 2nd reboot, I plugged 40 » 4k in and all is well since.

Good Luck! It feels like Big Sur is the largest beta test yet.

Suggest you look at SwitchResX to a adjust the resolution. I've also heard of problems with the Apple Magic Mouse - so I do not use that anymore. I wake the monitor with a Logitech mouse and have no problems. I don't even use the Apple keyboard anymore. I use the Satechi keyboard and it is better than the Apple one that is triple the price. Also try changing the cable to the Monitor. Some are better than others - only suggestions that worked for me on a 34 inch UW screen. The max resolution I could get that looked half decent is 3440x 1440 at 60Hz.

Good luck!
