Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

Same problem. Just installed 11.2.1 - No Joy.

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2016 - 2019

32GB ram 4TB.

I'm connected to a J5Create JCD543. Via USB-C

2 DELL SE 2719HR displays.

Also tested on a 2019 Macbook Air. - No joy

Prior to Big Sur, my set up was solid.

Work Arounds: As of Feb 16 2021

Option 1: j5Create just launched a driver. But...well... as of now, it's not useable. It works. Kind of... but it's DJTVirtualDisplayAgent and some other USB virtual software that needs to be approved by security. It enables the second display, but with a 1 or 2 second screen lag. So any interaction with items on that display are slow. Like using Virtual PC in the 1990's. Maybe they will improve this.

Option 2: Use 2 USB-C ports. So, one cable goes into the j5Create hub and the second goes into an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Not the end of the world, but does require an extra USB-C port. results in normal use of 2 displays.

Option 3: I tried other hubs (prices may have changed since posting this.)

USB-3 Hub 123.99

https://amzn.to/3jV4aYp (both displays worked, but requires a special USB-C dual port cable) - returned

Portable USB-C hub pro $59

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GZ7PT (both displays worked, but also requires 2 ports, plus, it's a short cable, all cables must be visible on the table. I'm sure you know what I mean.. messy. - returned

Docking Station OKX $149

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLXLW1Q (Yes, best choice so far. only requires 1 cable and has lots of ports. BUT It does require a driver.

It's still a hack. requires you to be logged into the user account that you have installed the software. So, that means 1 display will be active while rebooting, up until you actually log in, then after about 15 seconds, it launches the second display. No lag, it works well as a work around. This one I'm keeping.

Oh, to save you time, I tried installing this displaylink software to use with other hubs. No dice, it looks for it's own hardware. sorry... (as of the time of this posting. Maybe that will change)

Summary:

I kept the OKX docking with displaylink for my home office. It's nice and clean, with the hub hidden and a 1 simple cable into my USB-C port (also provides power). Nice... but cluncky when rebooting. Must wait for software to load.

At work, I kept the j5Create. 1 USB-C cable from the hub, and all my devices are neatly tucked away. Requires a second HDMI-USBC cable to power 2 monitors, and takes 2 ports. Hopefully Apple will figure out the conflicting software or someone will find a terminal hack to help us all out.

I'm also experiencing this or a very similar issue. After the Big Sur update (14.1) external monitors aren't being recognized or resolution downgraded to 1080p. I have 3x Benq PD3220u 4k monitors on a 2019 Macbook Pro that worked without a glitch on Catalina. 2 of the monitors are daisy chained on the left bus, the other is by itself on the right bus. You can tell that the USB bus doesn't feed the daisy chained devices a signal instantly, there's a lag or no signal. This never happened in Catalina where they woke up flawlessly from power nap. I even use the $$$ 2m Apple branded Thunderbolt3 cables.

Reboots don't solve the problem. There's usually a different monitor coming online each boot. I've stopped daisy chaining and now feed 3x cables directly into the MBP. This doesn't solve the problem either and one of the screens comes back as 1080p with the other two at 4k if I'm lucky.

Apple please FIX THIS.

Has anyone found a way to trigger an re-scan of Thunderbolt bus without rebooting the MacBook Pro?

Edit: the BenQ Display Pilot App now also struggles correctly identifying screens 1, 2 and 3 and will highlight the wrong device.

This is the first time I have encountered such a serious bug in years of Mac usage - does Apple read these forums? I assume everyone who has posted on here has also sent a bug notification to Apple - the more of us who do this the better.

I spoke to tech support a few days ago and worryingly they claimed that my call was the first they had heard of this issue, and they weren't aware of other users having problems. Like others I am very frustrated that my expensive monitor is currently of little use. Luckily I am not working much over the holiday period, but when I 'return' in January, this is really going to dent productivity.

Is this the same problem? My external monitor is Sceptre. Computer is MacOS Big Sur version 11.0.1. The display on the external Sceptre is stretched. We’ve tried all the display resolutions and it’s still stretched. MacOS Catalina worked fine on this external monitor. The guy at Apple said I need to get a compatible monitor and sent me a link for a $5000 monitor. What?

How lucky you are. I also contacted the Apple support today and it was absolutely useless. I wasn’t sure what was less helpful: the support or a piece of dry bread in my kitchen. It’s so ridiculous that I can’t use my screen anymore. I cannot believe that Apple is planning to make a car. They should start out with getting their current products fixed!!

made A try with switchresx today (also installed display link but the external monitor was not recognised).

I forced the 4K res at 60Hz and rebooted. At startup the MacBook Pro 16 fans started at full speed and all screens were black. I kept power button pressed and restarted. The duly stem booted, the ext display was set at 4K res but still at 30Hz 😭😭😭😭

Has anyone downloaded the beta version of 11.2 to see if the problem persists?

I'm freaking out because I'm completely unable to use my external screen anymore. It's not just the quality of the picture. I would gladly take a worse resolution. The display is either not recognized at all or the with an HDMI-cable connected to a HDMI-USB-c adapter the picture is flicking continuously making it impossible to use it for work!

It is so f..... ridiculous considering the sh... amount of money that they are making with their crap!!!
