Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

Same problem. Just installed 11.2.1 - No Joy.

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2016 - 2019

32GB ram 4TB.

I'm connected to a J5Create JCD543. Via USB-C

2 DELL SE 2719HR displays.

Also tested on a 2019 Macbook Air. - No joy

Prior to Big Sur, my set up was solid.

Work Arounds: As of Feb 16 2021

Option 1: j5Create just launched a driver. But...well... as of now, it's not useable. It works. Kind of... but it's DJTVirtualDisplayAgent and some other USB virtual software that needs to be approved by security. It enables the second display, but with a 1 or 2 second screen lag. So any interaction with items on that display are slow. Like using Virtual PC in the 1990's. Maybe they will improve this.

Option 2: Use 2 USB-C ports. So, one cable goes into the j5Create hub and the second goes into an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Not the end of the world, but does require an extra USB-C port. results in normal use of 2 displays.

Option 3: I tried other hubs (prices may have changed since posting this.)

USB-3 Hub 123.99

https://amzn.to/3jV4aYp (both displays worked, but requires a special USB-C dual port cable) - returned

Portable USB-C hub pro $59

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GZ7PT (both displays worked, but also requires 2 ports, plus, it's a short cable, all cables must be visible on the table. I'm sure you know what I mean.. messy. - returned

Docking Station OKX $149

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLXLW1Q (Yes, best choice so far. only requires 1 cable and has lots of ports. BUT It does require a driver.

https://www.displaylink.com/downloads

It's still a hack. requires you to be logged into the user account that you have installed the software. So, that means 1 display will be active while rebooting, up until you actually log in, then after about 15 seconds, it launches the second display. No lag, it works well as a work around. This one I'm keeping.

Oh, to save you time, I tried installing this displaylink software to use with other hubs. No dice, it looks for it's own hardware. sorry... (as of the time of this posting. Maybe that will change)

Summary:

I kept the OKX docking with displaylink for my home office. It's nice and clean, with the hub hidden and a 1 simple cable into my USB-C port (also provides power). Nice... but cluncky when rebooting. Must wait for software to load.

At work, I kept the j5Create. 1 USB-C cable from the hub, and all my devices are neatly tucked away. Requires a second HDMI-USBC cable to power 2 monitors, and takes 2 ports. Hopefully Apple will figure out the conflicting software or someone will find a terminal hack to help us all out.

As many others, I have a similar issue.

I have two Monitors connected to my Mac Pro 7.1. An Eizo CS2730 and an Eizo S1721. The S1721 is the secondary monitor. It's connected via a DVI/USB C adapter.

After the Mac Pro starts, the secondary monitor won't be properly recognised. It seems to be in the system, but the display stays black. The monitor flashes a "No Signal" prompt in a short pattern, as if there would be a signal, but an unstable one.

If I unplug and reconnect the monitor, it works until the next time Big Sur boots up.

This problem ist enormously inconvenient. The Mac Pro is placed behind a mixer in the control room in my recording studio. It's an embarrassment every time I have to crawl around on my knees in front of the customers. Quite a few people ask, why Apples professional $10.000,- computer can't run two simple monitors as usual.

Please, Apple! I'd be forever grateful if this problem could be fixed … like ASAP! Think about the companies reputation amongst professional users! Pleeeease!

I 'm using a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" and two 23" Apple Cinema HD Displays. Every thing worked until the first Big Sur update.

I don't have any access that I can see to change monitor settings. My outputs from the displays (in an umbilical cable) are DVI, Flash and USB.

Apple sent me an adapter with HDMI, USB-C, and USB inputs. All I can do is connect te USB-C via the DVI to USB-C adapter I already have (that used to work).

Nothing works.

I just installed 11.2.2 on my 4TB Macbook Pro - No luck.

If I use 2 USBC ports, 1 monitor plugged into each, it works. But any kind of hub that is meant for multiple monitors and no luck.

It used to work so well before Big Sur. I wonder what Apple changed that stopped this?

Below is a screen shot of my specs.

Oh, does anyone remember the mini-display port issues from years back. I wonder if there is some kind of hack like that to enable the USB-C port to send out display information for both screens on a single port.

Just wondering.

Yes, it is simply astounding that Apple doesn't care to put their vast resources into fixing this disastrous problem. I don't get it, many if not most people use external monitors -- which are now not supported by Apple. I would be so grateful if I had not trusted Apple and had not upgraded to Big Sur. Apparently those of us suffering this disaster are not making enough of a fuss for Apple to feel any pressure to fix this bug. Of course Big Sur should never have been released having this bug. Shame on Apple.

If we would all complain to Apple every single day, I guess they would get around to fixing this issue. The squeaky wheel gets oiled! I will be calling Apple again; and complaining on their website again, tomorrow.

I already complained to Trading Standards (via Citizens Advice, under Consumer Rights) for Deceptive Description/ False Advertising as the Mac mini is advertised as being able to "Connect one external display up to 6K and a second with HDMI 2.0 up to 4K" and in my case, the 5k display I am connecting, does not perform well (flickers in FCPX, and that is basically what I got the Mac mini for, being silent in FCPX and not sending video signal out after waking-up).

And, of course, the tech guys at apple not being capable of resolving my problem and returning the Mac mini saying it is working fine and then admitting they do not have a 5-6k monitor to test the thing...

I made something stupid today: just bought a brand new Macbook Air M1 (8x GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) from Amazon (110€ off normal price; in order to be able to return it easily via Amazon if this test doesn't work), migrated from my 16" 2019 MBP via Thunderbolt cable in 7 minutes with 240GB of data and programs, upgraded from stock 11.1 to 11.2.2, rebooted, connected via USB-C natively to my Philips 499PH0 and got a native resolution of 5120x1440. I'm so shocked I need a beer. Insane!?!

My Issue... New MacBook Air 13 In. Purchased 12/25/19. After I was sick of being bugged to install their latest Big CRAP update which took hours on end... of which I, held off installing until mid December 2020, my Screen would show me Tiny colored vertical lines.. No Screen Display..

Freaking out-- I turned this machine off then on. Everything came back, This has happened 4 times since then and NO ONE in their Customer Support gave me a straight answer. I spent many hours during each of the 4 or 5 calls to their Upper Tier Team. All I heard was, not sure, wait and see, take a picture, LETS DO THIS, LETS DO THAT--- in the meantime the warranty was DONE.

Over and OUT!

I refuse to purchase an expensive external hard drive etc.. Why should I !!

I was also told by a Mac computer service guy in my area that it does sound like Hardware and if that's the case HE won't be a able to get the part because MY computer is too new. Oh Wonderful !!!

I won't go further with this vertical line issue-- but I will say this about their products which we own... Apple TV's phones tablets and computers..

I AM

DONE.. and will NEVER buy another Apple Product.

I intend to go back to Bill Gates and PC's.. These Apple products are NOT worth the price--customer service plus their stores are of of no use to anyone it seems. I've heard so much crap from this company since December 2020, that I am totally confused as to what's really going on with this (3 mo out of warranty) $1,600.00 Machine! DISGUSTED and STRESSED OUT :(

:) Thank you Tommy C-- I will give it a try. Sounds Like--- You know more than THEY DO. I appreciate your expertise. I'm sick of this.. I doubt this new machine needs -- as Apple said-- A new Hard Drive. Our issues sound more like Bad software from The BIG NOTHING operating system!

BTW.. I was told by Apple guy in my area "Its so new, I wouldn't even be able to GET THE PART. Un freaking believable! Hopefully this will work or BACK TO Mr Bill Gates! Thanks T. C. Annette M. :)

Sorry to add one more to this thread, but since I have managed (somehow!) to connect my external monitor via the USB-C cable to the laptop I am noticing another issue.

If I re-open the laptop once it has gone in 'Screen Saver' mode, I notice that Firefox is frozen; I can switch between the tabs that are already open, but when I'm on one of those tabs I cannot do anything. I can also open a new tab, but then I cannot write on the URL bar or do anything on that tab. The command bar of Firefox still works, in fact I can close the application (Firefox -> Quit Firefox), and if I close and then re-open it works. This did not happen when I connected the laptop using an HDMI connection via a docking station (LENTION USB C 11-in-1 Laptop Docking Station(CB-C95)).

Not sure if anyone who managed to get the USB-C connection going experienced the same issue....

Thanks !

Fab
