Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

How lucky you are. I also contacted the Apple support today and it was absolutely useless. I wasn’t sure what was less helpful: the support or a piece of dry bread in my kitchen. It’s so ridiculous that I can’t use my screen anymore. I cannot believe that Apple is planning to make a car. They should start out with getting their current products fixed!!

Same issue on a MBP 16 connected to a Benq pd2720u through thunderbolt 3 port. The Mac loses the external display setup any time it is disconnected. Resolution is no correctly set and refresh is 30Hz. Never had an issue before updating to 11.1.

can’t believe Apple has released an update with such big issues!!!! It has a huge impact on productivity

You would think they would come up with a hot fix to fix this issue... Make sure to user the "Feedback assistant" app on your Mac to inform Apple about this issue, and point them to this thread. At least that's what I did...

This laggy screen at 30hz is killing me and my productivity, hopefully they'll speed up the fix as they will receive more reports via the Feedback Assistant.

Take care!

After the latest Big Sur update, we too lost separate control of our monitors (iMac 2020 with Wacom Cintiq Pro 24" tablet). If we leave the iMac in SLEEP mode and the Wacom in its SLEEP mode each night rather than shut down/reboot the next day, then a touch on the SPACE bar brings everything back to life as before. But on a reboot the monitors switch to MIRRORING with the Wacom the predominant monitor available in SYSTEM Preferences and the iMac screen unavailable. The only cure is to turn off the Wacom tablet, then turn it on again to let the OS recognize it as another monitor if we have rebooted or logged out. Also, we have to re-adjust the BRIGHTNESS settings on the iMac monitor because the OS boosts it to MAX on each boot up. We calibrate our monitors with a Spyder Pro and fortunately the OS remembers the Spyder Pro ICC profile! So far this procedure is working for us but we are not hopeful this 'fix' will remain available until Apple repairs this quality control issue.

Yup, I'm having the same issue. Sounds like this has been an issue since beta. Very frustrating since I'm mostly working off an external display.

The native refresh rate on my display is 60hz but it is now displaying at 30hz. Also when I wake my computer, it doesn't read the display even with the lid open. I have to unplug and replug cable for it to "register."

I've called in and have ongoing conversations with senior techs but no resolution yet.

Please call apple support as i did. Because they do not know. They suggested to do everything you all tried. Only then they can find the bug they say. But i am facing a deadline so i can only do it somewhere in januari. The more people send complains to apple support on this, and best is calling, the sooner it will be fixed they told me. This here is an external site that their technicians - to my astonishment- do not follow!!!!

I did it! Totally unuseful! In Italy they just don't know anything about this issue.

They asked me to:

1- disconnect and reconnect the cable

2- try with a usb-c to HDMI cable

3- create a new admin user and try with the new account

...it seems they think we are a bunch of stupids people!

Someone solved by using Display Link. I'm gonna try this today, however it's very annoying to use a third parties driver in order to solve problem with very very basic funcionalities.

Having the same issue. My 4K LG 32UD99-W was working fine with My MacBook Pro 16" (2019) running Catalina, connected via Apple 0.8m Thunderbolt cable. After I upgraded to Big Sur 11.1, the external display works erratically, not being properly detected and only driven at 1920x1080 resolution. Needless to say this is a disaster as I work on graphics 100% of my time on the external display.

I called Apple support and tried, upon their recommendation: SMC reset, NVRAM reset, restart in SafeMode. None worked.

I then tried to connect the LG display via a HDMI-to-USB-C dongle and in that case it was driven at the correct resolution, but of course this is just a workaround and I really want to use the Thunderbolt connection, since it is also providing power to the laptop.

My conclusion is that the OS update impacted somehow the Thunderbolt driver or FW, especially if (as someone mentioned) downgrading back to Catalina didn't help.

Apple didn't really help on the phone, they seem not to be aware of the issue or at least of its severity. their last recommendation was to contact LG to check for a FW update of the external monitor...

My configuration looks like this. A MAC Mini 2018 and an Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 inch, which is connected with a Tunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter. After the update from MAC OS Catalina to Big Sur 11.01, neither the display audio nor the camera and the USB outputs on the monitor work. The brightness of the display can no longer be regulated. The display starts to flicker even after a short working time. Dan only helps pull out the Thunderbolt plug. Resetting the NVRAM, PRAM, and SMC unfortunately does not bring any improvement. Neither does the update to Big Sur 11.1 or Beta 11.2.

made A try with switchresx today (also installed display link but the external monitor was not recognised).

I forced the 4K res at 60Hz and rebooted. At startup the MacBook Pro 16 fans started at full speed and all screens were black. I kept power button pressed and restarted. The duly stem booted, the ext display was set at 4K res but still at 30Hz 😭😭😭😭

Has anyone downloaded the beta version of 11.2 to see if the problem persists?

I'm freaking out because I'm completely unable to use my external screen anymore. It's not just the quality of the picture. I would gladly take a worse resolution. The display is either not recognized at all or the with an HDMI-cable connected to a HDMI-USB-c adapter the picture is flicking continuously making it impossible to use it for work!

It is so f..... ridiculous considering the sh... amount of money that they are making with their crap!!!
