AOL "unable to verify account name or password"

I am trying to set up Aol through Apple Mail on an older MacBook Pro running High Sierra. I am entering the correct information when I go to System Preferences, Internet Accounts and then choose AOL, but each time I get the message "unable to verify account name or password." My information is correct and works if I sign in via a browser, but I want to set it up through Mail. I know I dealt with this on another Mac 5+ years ago, but I cannot remember the solution.
