iMac 27 i7 Drops Wifi Connection

I have been facing a problem that my iMac would suddenly drop the connection to my router which is not far from my Aztech Router when left idle for about 10 minutes. I have a 5 year old HP laptop which is located way farther from the router and is not showing any problems. All software updated are up to date. I have done all the diagnostics, deleting the network, setting up again. Anyone know of a concrete solution to this? Maybe a firmware update or a reset procedure of the airport extreme built-in card?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have the exact same problem as connex1 with my Netgear wireless router 10 inches away from my iMac 21.5" core i3 4GB, which is less than two months old, and I have had the problem since three weeks after buying it. If left internet idle, I cannot use Safari to open a page or access the iTunes store, despite the fact the the Airport logo is all the way up. So I have to go to System Settings/Network/Assist me.../Diagnostics and what I see is ISP Failed on the left, so I click on Continue, select the network, then it connects as if doing so for the first time and I get back online. It has been annoying me. So in order to stay online, I lower the volume and access some continuous stream of movie or cartoon so that it isn't internet idle again.

Is this a hardware issue? Did I get a bad Airport with this iMac? My iBook G4 and Mac Mini don't have this issue.

This is oncredibly frustrating. I have an Airport Extreme b/g, (The dome model) and a secure, private network with WPA2 password. I've tried reprogramming the dome, resetting everything, I've also tried opening the network without password or security, I get the same issue.

My notebook automatically finds and logs on in Windows and Sow Leopard, my Mac Minis log on with no problems and all of them stay logged on and I have 2 HP Printers on the wireless network , again, no problems with printing to them either.

Now I've just bought the new a 21.5" Core i5 3.66GB and it will not stay logged on and often won't log on for a while even with me switching the airport on and off. I've tried everything, all my other computers do NOT have this problem. The iMac is 2 feet away from the wireless router and just won't find it sometimes. When it eventually decides to log on I get full bars of course. But if it goes to sleep, I'm stuck trying to reconnect for 5 minutes sometimes. I've run techtool and everything checks out O.K. on the hardware tests. I wanted to run the Apple Hardware test from the DVD but I don't have a wired keyboard here and the stupid wireless one doesn't respond when I pres the D on start up, so the computer just keeps restarting over and over and I don't ever get to the hardware test mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is EXTREMELY annoying and since so many others are having the problem, I'm wondering what Apple is doing?!

does anyone know how to bring this issue up with apple past the 90days support? I can't believe apple now charges for tech support. Do they have basic email support? I've been looking on their site but its incredibly hard to find. I want to take this up with apple, and I hope everyone here will complain about the BS policy on charging for basic email tech support.

I've been having the same wifi issues, when all other computers in my house run perfectly fine. Airport shows a full signal, however data is transferred very slow. Nothing seems to fix it, i've tried everything discussed in forums, changing channels, changing DNS servers, etc., none have fixed the issues.

90 days of tech support has been the standard for Apple for years. It is one selling point for Apple Care, it not only extends the warranty to three years, but it also extends the telephone tech support to three years as well.

However, if you have a warranty issue there is no charge for telephone support. Apple determines if that is the case and asks for a bank card number until they have determined that it is truly a warranty issue and not a non-covered user-caused issue.

TheWarpLynx.... Hi, I'm still in warranty so I called Apple and here's what they told me... If your Wireless router is less than about 6ft from the iMac you may get connectivity issues. Didn't quite know what to say to that, but he insists that a router too close is "BAD", especially under 3-4ft. Hope this helps you at least.

I'm upgrading to a N router because there's too many wireless networks in our building here and I'm still getting signal drops.

Hi Nigel Taylor, thanks ... yeah I'll definitely try that and see what happens. The router being too close is something that had crossed my mind, but then I said "nah" that can't be the issue, why would it be? Physically speaking: the closer the router is, the better it should be for the iMac to get not only a signal but a strong one, and a lasting one. My wild guess is that maybe the airports for the iMacs are built specially to get data through EM waves from farther away so nicely that the downside is that it messes up if the router is too close. So I'll try that, although I'm gonna have to move quite a few things where I am in order for me to get another nice set up from the one I already have.
