Cannot install Canon Printer Driver after Big Sur 11.1 update

Just updated my iMac with OS with Big Sur 11.1 update and cannot install (or re-install) Canon Printer Driver for Canon Color Laser Printer MF 8280Cw. Tried online Apple support but no help there... Any suggestions?

Apple and or Microsoft never make drivers for third party hardware for them to attempt to do so would require them to violate the intellectual properties of the printer manufacturers, they hand in drivers for their hardware and apple and microsoft test and if they verify it they include it, if the hardware manufacturer wish not to support the version of the operating system there is little the operating system markers can do, apart from banning the hardware manufacturer from their plant form all together

I 100% agree with this. I am a bit mind boggled that absolutely none of our Canon copiers throughout our environment have function in Big Sur OS. The official UFR II universal driver form Canon that only kind of worked yesterday in 11.0 when printing only a couple of pages at a time does not work at all in 11.1 today, lol. Every single major OS update completely botches print functionalities. I can understand the push for going paperless but I don't think Apple is intentionally trying to be that evil. If it doesn't support AirPrint, Apple doesn't seem to care. It's sad.

There are two possible answers:

1) With every Apple OS upgrade some printer drivers (and other drivers) need to be upgraded by their respective vendors because Apple’s architecture changes

2) Due to #1 above many driver installer packages check the OS being run to see if the driver is the proper one. In some cases the driver is perfectly fine for the new OS but the installer needs to be updated.

In either case, this isn’t Apple’s issue to fix. It is Canon’s.

Hi IVGu,

Not yet... I guess, Apple and Canon should put some effort into this issue. I did contact Apple support but, apparently, even they do not know how to tackle this issue... My next call is to Canon. They did issue printer driver for Big Sur 11.0 on 11/16/20 but it appears that they are still working on 11.1 ...although, my biggest frustration is with Apple as they do not take all aspects of OS updates into consideration when they design new OS updates. As a consequence, my productivity is substantially affected in last 48 hours as I'm in design business and I have to print a lot... I don't know what happened to Apple... very disappointed

Hi Rudegar,

Thanks for your answer.

This is not what I was implying.

I fully understand intellectual properties issue.

My point is very simple:

If Apple IT engineers/designers are taking their time to update OS, why not take into consideration leaving option to work with exiting printer drivers until printer company comes up with new updated software/drivers? What do you do meanwhile as you are awaiting for software/drivers updates? Stop your production... Do nothing... Must be a better way... Clearly, I'm not the only one who is experiencing this issue... and this issue obviously affecting users production...
