It actually works pretty well for me. I didn't pair it (initially) with Mac though. Did the setup from my iPhone and it got recognized on my Mac automatically afterwards just like Airpods Pro. It always shows up under the sound output selection as intended. ANC/Siri works also.
The things that didn't work I discovered are 1. play/pause/next/previous by pressing the digital crown 2. no automatic switching because it isn't Big Sur..

I had to upgrade to 11.1(Big Sur) to get them to be recognized.
What if you have an old MacBook Pro that isn't compatible with Big Sur?
They're recognized as regular bluetooth headphone for me on Catalina 10.15.6.
While using them on BigSur, you can toggle on/off transparency mode and ANC.
Phew! Mine come next week and I had a sudden panic that they wouldn't connect to my early 2013 MacBook Pro at all!
This should not be the comment that indicates the problem is solved. As others have mentioned, the AirPod Max work with Catalina. All features except automatic switching.
EDIT: The play/pause function via digital crown is working for me now. But sometimes it still won't work. (e.g. for a few seconds when launching iTunes, but it will work after a few sec.)
