Big Sur - New/Open/Save dialog box -size won't save

New issue on Big Sur 11.1 -- my open and save dialog boxes "revert" to the original size.

I've tried many applications, I've done PRAM and SMC resets, I've relaunched Finder, I've resized the screen (default > scaled), yet... it remains the default, small size (which is irritating).

This is new in 11.1 - 11.01 and 10.x never had this issue.

Ok. On Big Sur 11.1 and it is insulting that no one in the macOS product team thought that half-size from previously normal open or close dialogs were wrong. Nothing the end user can do about this as the die is cast in the frameworks that create these panels. I have some Swift and Python/Objective-C applications here that set a custom framesize for open panels, and these appear as they have in the past, albeit a narrower side panel.

Although the 11.1 Open and Save panels allow one to click and drag a corner to enlarge them, it is not remembered by the application. I suggest sending feedback directly to the macOS product team. Let them know that sloppy work is not acceptible.

This started happening for me immediately after updating to 11.1.

Open/Save dialogs were saving their sizes just fine under 11.0 and 11.0.1. Now they revert to their (tiny) defaults every time.

Finder windows are still saving their sizes just fine.

Already reported using the feedback form. I find it mind-boggling that no one at Apple noticed this during testing.

@VikingOSX – agreed – the more folks submit feedback directly to the macOS product team the more likely Apple might be to listen to users on this huge UI Design screwup.

Personally I submitted it as a "bug" with the complaint "I'm reporting this as a bug because it has to be, I can't believe somebody in UI Design knowingly thought this was a good idea"

Not only does the save/open/print dialog box not "remember" the size/location from last use. But it's also difficult EVERY TIME because I have to perform TWO actions:

1) option left click the bottom right corner – which expands the box both horizontally and vertically at the same time – does not work unless you click in the EXACT right spot (which in itself is irritating as eff) and then...

2) I also have to make the finder sidebar wide enough to see which folder I need to navigate to.

Whomever thought this was a good idea needs their head examined.

I complained and Apple deleted the post - unacceptable.

What we all need is an immediate update.

Apple - please ensure you release 11.2 immediately and make sure that any dialogue box that is resized is remembered - at the very least by the app - but I personally would prefer globally.

Globally - I would appreciate it if the dialogue box was full screen height or at least application window height [so not to cover the top menu bar] and two panes wide.

So the options are:

  • minimum width
  • minimum height
  • release a non-beta version of BS immediately

Thanks.

Many thanks for pursuing this to the extent you have...

However, Big Sur is full of bugs, not just the dialogue box issue.

  • MacMail is not counting the inbox correctly
  • MacMail prefs window is still much too narrow to view any list of email address accounts [long-time issue, seriously bad]
  • MacMail count dots now grey on grey background - extremely poor UI design, absolutely horrendous
  • MacMail email message background colouring - very poor implementation, impossible to manage [had one email to send this week that needed it, it failed]
  • MacMail drops added attachments when you change the recipient's name - new bug? just noticed a week ago.
  • Preview immediately pops up with "Open" dialogue box when creating a screen shot - when you need to save that image?!?!
  • TextEdit - doesn't drop the current search until you click "Done" - much prefer you just click off the highlighted result in the search, much more efficient process then having to go back up to the top bar again [pretty sure previous versions weren't this bad] Pretty sure almost all other applications do this properly, TextEdit has been annoyingly doing this for a year now
  • Apps added to the dock automatically - I may be lazy in not searching on this but why does it automatically add apps? Much prefer the option you have to select the app to keep it added to the dock, some apps I just use sporadically, don't want them added unless I specifically request so

... and this is just off the top of my head what I deal with on a regular basis!

So, if you happen to be talking to the Apple team, please tell them to read ALL of the discussion posts on the current state of the MacOS. Here's hoping 11.3 is a much-improved, non-beta version of the OS.

They shouldn't feel so bad tho', you should see my list of Adobe bugs! ;-)

Thank you.

I believe the amazingly slow roll-out of this is due to a number of issues, not just the window sizing. Big Sur is wrought with issues...

  • window sizing - as we have discussed
  • Finder "forgets" Drop Box submenu... so - they moved it to a lower position, but now after a few hours of use, the Finder completely drops this menu altogether, so if I want to share a portfolio link - GONE. Thanks, really helps my daily flow.
  • Mail is just an absolute kludge now. A draft message activates the inbox counter. I could go on about how awful Mail is - the non-scaleable Prefs window is just absolutely horrible... the mail inbox counter hasn't worked properly since Catalina, the notification doesn't allow you to click-through to THAT message - click the notification and Mail comes to front, but the message may still be buried in whatever inbox it went to, or Folder On My Mac which is where I sort my incoming mail - so the notification is a kludge
  • sounds goes wonky after a few hours... I was on a Zoom call Monday and client sounded like they were talking through crumpled paper... as the day progressed off the call I noticed the Mac's own noises were garbled
  • TextEdit - oh god don't get me started - OK, I'm already started.... it just quits when cutting a line of text - and these are Apple's OWN INSTALLED MYRIAD OF CRAPTASTIC FONTS, nothing new here
  • Fonts - you already got me started - :-) - I need to manage my fonts for projects - I simply cannot have a bajillion versions of some ridiculously-unusable font in my application menus - even the Apple support person I chatted with did not know enough - thinking FontBook is used to disable fonts - it NO LONGER DISABLES ANY APPLE FONTS

So, brace yourselves, its only going to get worse as the M1 chip brings us closer to our phone in terms of functionality and management - non-existent. Heap on as many emojis as possible to keep the kids happy and the real users be ******.

I lose at least 1-2 hours a day dealing with the Mac OS at this point and I'm tired of it.

However, my developer just bought a new Dell with Windoze and installed Linux for his development work - I ain't going there any time soon! But I may take my 2019 MacBookPro into Apple store and revert to pre-Catalina and NOT buy a new M1 MacBookPro as had planned. I just cannot afford to continue having my tools cost me time and money to use.

Stay safe everyone.

I'm still getting this bug, albeit now somewaht altered in 11.2.2. The save As or Export dialogue comes up with the right (remembered) window size but with the content embedded in a small (the former default size) corner of the window and I STILL NEED TO CLICK ON A CORNER TO GET IT TO THE COME BACK RIGHT SIZE! Below is the whole window that opens (the grey areas are part of the window but the window's content is all in the lower left corner....)

Apple is working towards a singular OS across all devices that will eliminate all practical use for professional designers world-wide. So we'll have to get used to designing logos with just a library of pre-made emojis. Seems to be a never-ending new supply of those, not that we need any more, they just keep coming while the OS itself dwindles away to non-existence.
