Twice the mute switch on the left has gone to the mute position without my having switched it? What's up with this?

In all seriousness, you must be moving the switch accidently. The switch WILL NOT move of it's own accord.
All my iphones have always done it.
Put insulating tape over the switch. While you’re at it tape over the SIM tray to waterproof it. Then add a gel case.
After taping the switch my current phone case had the switch hole filled in with air curing silicone putty.
It's actually easier to move the switch and it happens to all of us from time to time.
It takes quite a bit of effort to move the switch. I have a case on the phone. I know it's completely weird.
Sleep mode does NOT physically move the mute switch.
It's caused by sleep mode. It does switch itself off.
