M1 Macbook Pro refresh rate of 30hz on a 4k monitor?

Hey guys,

I am currently using an external monitor (Benq EW2780U) and using a Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable connected directly from the laptop to the monitor. I am only able to achieve a refresh rate of 30hz when the monitor is rated for 60hz. I have gone through all the display options and my refresh rate cannot be set higher to anything above 30?

Could someone please help me out with this?

Thanks

Once you have done your homework by testing with high quality cables, (at least "4K" capable) solutions to low resolution are unknown. We have no community generated tips for you.

Use the contact support link at the top of every forum page, work with them and do not give up. Do not let them tell you it is solved unless/until they file a bug report or send you to a second-level tech who promises to file a bug report.

It is quite possible this is a bug in Big Sur 11.1

That's a very nice cable. But your display is not a ThunderBolt display. it needs a USB-C cable.

Connectivity

HDMIHDMI (v2.0)x2

DisplayPortDisplayPort (v1.4)x1

USB Type-CYes (PowerDelivery 60W, DP Alt mode, Data)

It is not clear to me what the UI scaling does with the refresh rate. When scaling the system report show this:

BenQ SW271:

 Resolution: 3840x2160 (2160p/4K UHD 1 - Ultra High Definition)

 UI Looks like: 1920 x 1080 @ 30.00Hz

 Framebuffer Depth: 30-Bit Colour (ARGB2101010)

How should I read this? Looks like 30Hz or ís 30Hz.

Most of these problems occur when later versions of MacOS look more critically at the connection to the displays, and notices that transmit errors are occurring. In response, it drops the frame rate, or the resolution, or fails to connect.

In general, a better cable will produce fewer transmit errors and fewer issues.
