Software Update only appears inside System Preferences if you're running macOS Mojave or later.
To get macOS and app updates for a Mac running macOS High Sierra or earlier, check the Updates section in the Mac App Store.
Which exact model is your MacBook? Is it currently running macOS 10.12 (Sierra), as per your tagline?
