File management problems - hangs, freezes in Big Sur Version 11.0.01

Since installing Big Sur my Mac (MacBook Pro 15in, 2017) is having trouble with file management. Simple operations like dragging a file from the desktop into a folder are causing the machine to hang, heat up, give me the 'spinning wheel' and I'm often having to force quit applications when doing simple things like trying to upload an image or share a weblink via email. Any advice? I'm simply trying to tidy up my desktop and move files around and it seems to push the machine into a frenzy. Very frustrating...

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.

I think I've solved it. In my case I ran disk utility first aid on all sectors of my MBP HD, including the main "Apple SSD" and the "Container" separately. Warning this took 3 or 4 minutes and your Mac is useless during it. Then I rebooted and this reboot took longer than normal by a good 15 or 20 seconds -- something was getting repaired. After my first reboot, the file-dragging problem seemed fixed but Messages would not open and I had to force quit a couple times. I logged out and back into Google and confirmed my MBP was properly connected with permissions via my phone, then rebooted once more. This reboot proceeded normally, I opened Mail first, then Safari, then Messages and all opened and are operational. And the file dragging snag thing is gone. Hope this helps.

Hello MajorVoid,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

It is our understanding from your post that after updating your MacBook Pro to macOS Big Sur, you were trying to organize your files and the Mac hangs, heats up and freezes. We recommend testing the issue while your Mac is in safe mode.  The following articles have the steps you will need to test the issue in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed."

Best Regards.

Thanks - that hasn't solved the problem though. I seem to be having really basic file management issues. Simply trying to rename or move a file from one folder to another often causes the whole machine to seize up - I'm getting the message 'Finder not responding' sometimes. I'm wondering if it's partly related to iCloud sync? Or worse, a potential hardware issue ? I've now upgraded to Big Sur 11.1 and there is no improvement.

Thanks - I have loads of spare disk space and I'm not really running many 3rd party apps. Using Activity Monitor I am seeing a high allocation to 'kernel' activity when these freezes and glitches happen - the problems are most frequent in Mail and during routine file management activities - eg moving a file from one folder to another, or simply trying to rename a file. I think it must be a software issue, or at least something to do with the way in which the OS is interacting with my hardware - I'm having to force quit applications with alarming regularity. None of this happened under any of the previous incarnations of OS X. Apple - can you please get this sorted? It's really annoying.

Just bumping this discussion a bit in case anyone else can help - I've taken all the steps outlined above and I'm still having egregious problems perfoming simple operations on my Mac since upgrading to Big Sur (11.1). Simple things like saving or renaming a document, attaching a file to an email, or dragging a file from one folder to another cause absolute panic / hangs /freezes/ spinning wheel on my computer, and usually have to force quit the application and recover my work.

Its a Mid 2017 MacBook Pro, 2.9 GHz quad core i7 with 16GB of RAM. I'd take it in to an Apple Store for help but they are all closed due to lockdown.... very very very frustrating.
