Tying to do Big Sur update 11.1. Stuck on "Preparing" for over one hour. Stated 5 minutes to go but that was about 45 minutes ago. Took 30 minutes to complete "ten minutes to go". Cleared the update so that I could use the iMac. Do not want to start all over again if there is a problem with the preparing and/or installation stage.
iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.0
I was having the same issue, every time I tried it juts hung at 10 minutes remaining for hours and over night.
Resolution I found was (trying to get into safe mode) shut down and hold shift whist powering on until apple icon appears. Let log back in again and try to run update - which was then successful.
